Join panelists from United Technologies, Medtronic, and Reservoir Labs as they discuss their careers in the world of research and development. Gain a clearer understanding of how these roles differ from that of academic research. Dr. John Khalil, United Technologies Dr. Khalil is an Associate Director of Research at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) in East Hartford, CT. During his past 13 years at UTRC, Dr. Khalil led a portfolio of projects including hydrogen storage for the Department of Energy, unmanned aerial vehicles for the Department of Defense, use of flammable refrigerant in chiller systems, new products development, solving technical problems for UTC divisions. He has six patents and patents pending and over 100 invention disclosures. He is UTRC’s technical focal point on Probabilistic Rik Assessment, Reliability Engineering, and Product Safety. In addition to his positions in industry, he has been a full professor (adjunct) of Chemical & Environmental Engineering at Yale school of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) and a Senior Research Scholar at Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies, where he was named a Yale faculty champion of online education by the past Dean (Mary Miller) of Yale College. Dr. Khalil is the current Operating Agent for the Hydrogen Safety Task of the International Energy Agency (IEA). He is the Editor-in-Chief for the Hydrogen Safety Journal of IEA, an editor for the Journal of Process Safety & Environmental Protection, and a Senior Editor for Journal of Environmental Engineering & Ecological Science in the UK. Dr. Richard Lethin, Reservoir Labs Richard Lethin is the President of Reservoir Labs, a privately held technology research and development company headquartered in New York City. Reservoir's engineers and computer scientists work on some of the most interesting and challenging problems related to high-performance computing and compilers, cybersecurity, advanced algorithms, and high-performance data analytics. Richard also holds the position of Associate Professor Adjunct at Yale University, teaching courses in VLSI and computer architecture. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Yale University in 1985 and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT in 1992 and 1997. Dr. Sachin Budhabhatti, Medtronic Sachin Budhabhatti serves as a Strategic & Portfolio Manager at Medtronic. Through this role, he is responsible for completing product and procedural opportunity assessments consistent with divisional strategies. In assessing customer and procedural needs, he generates product concepts, assesses feasibility, strategic fit, and financial metrics. Sachin received his M.S. (Mechanical Engineering) and PhD (Applied Biomedical Engineering) from Cleveland State University.

Sharon Louden is an artist, educator, and advocate. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the country. Louden is the editor of the Living and Sustaining a Creative Life series of books, which aim to showcase how artists’ creativity contributes to their communities and to the well-being of others. The first book in the series is in its seventh printing. She has taught studio and professional practice classes to students at all levels at several institutions. She graduated with an MFA from Yale in 1991. She will be moderating a panel with three other Yale alumni. Co-sponsored by the Traphagen Fund, the Poynter Fellowship, and the School of Art.
