Deciding whether to accept or decline an employment offer can arouse considerable anxiety. It is important that you do not feel pressured to make a hasty and ill-considered decision. Please consult an Office of Career Strategy career adviser to discuss your options. We strongly encourage you to relay your decisions in writing to the employer.

  • Students previously employed as interns by the employer, must be given until November 2, or two weeks from date of written offer (whichever is later) to decide whether to accept a full-time offer extended at the end of the summer. 
  • Students must be given until December 8, or two weeks from date of written offer (whichever is later), to decide whether to accept full-time job offers and summer internship offers that are extended during fall recruiting.
  • All students who participate in our Yale-Coordinated Domestic and International Internship programs can receive offers from employers at any point after February 3. Students will be given 2 business days to respond to these offers via Yale Career Link, powered by Symplicity. If a student does not respond after 2 business days the offer will automatically be rescinded. This policy only pertains to positions offered through the Yale-Coordinated Domestic and International Internship programs.
  • Students must be given until February 28, or two weeks from date of written offer (whichever is later) to decide whether to accept internship or full-time job offers extended during spring recruiting, with the exception of opportunities that are part of the Yale-Coordinated Domestic and International Internship programs.
  • Public Service/Public Interest Exception: Candidates may request that an employer extend the deadline to accept an employer's offer until as late as April 1 if the candidate is actively pursuing positions with public interest, government organizations or a national fellowship award.  Candidates may hold open only one offer in such circumstances.  Employers are encouraged to grant such requests.

After you have made your decision, the Office of Career Strategy recommends notifying the employer by telephone and following up with an acceptance letter. Please keep in mind that when you accept an offer, you have a professional obligation to join that employer.  Reneging on an offer (i.e., accepting an offer, changing your mind and then rejecting it) is extremely unprofessional; doing so damages your professional reputation, the reputation of Yale alumni employed by that organization and, of course, the reputation of Yale University.

First years, sophomores, and juniors who accept an offer and then renege on their acceptance may lose access to Office of Career Strategy services, including the on-campus interview program in future years. Seniors who accept an offer and then renege on their acceptance may lose access to on-campus recruiting and alumni career services.
