Surgical Assistant/Tech Fellowship

Job Title: Surgical Assistant/Tech Fellowship

Job Location: Boston, MA

Anticipated Start Date: June 2025; $19/hour

Job description:

Stephen O. Kovacs MD, Chief of Dermatology at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center

(Brighton) and MetroWest Medical Center (Framingham), is looking for three motivated leap year students for a hands-on, paid opportunity in surgical dermatology. With 26 years of experience as a Mohs surgeon, Dr. Kovacs is offering a unique position for students who plan to pursue a medical career but want to take a one- to two-year break before starting medical school.

Position Overview: This full-time fellowship provides a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to medicine, with 70% clinical experience and 100% patient interaction. Students will work directly alongside Dr. Kovacs during all surgical procedures, gaining practical skills and firsthand experience in patient care. Key responsibilities include:

  • Surgical Experience:
    • First-assisting in Mohs surgery and facial reconstruction
    • Managing bleeding by use of electrocautery
    • Bandaging of wounds
    • Assisting with biopsies and excisions
    • Taking vital signs
  • Non-Clinical Tasks:
    • Scheduling appointments and handling patient communications
    • Conducting phone consultations for Mohs surgery

Educational Component: Throughout the fellowship, Dr. Kovacs will conduct monthly Grand Rounds sessions, offering scientific and clinical education in dermatology, dermatologic surgery, and Mohs surgery, providing a well-rounded foundation for future medical education. Students will also be trained as histotechnicians to support laboratory functions.

Qualifications: This competitive opportunity is ideal for students who are eager to gain exposure to the medical field, especially in a surgical setting, and are looking for a meaningful gap year experience before entering medical school. While an interest in dermatology is not required, this opportunity will provide students with valuable exposure to a surgical outpatient setting. A car is helpful for traveling between the two office locations, but not required.

If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, please email your cover letter, transcript, resume and MCAT results (if taken) to Dr. Kovacs at Stephen.Kovacs@Steward.org.
