STEM PhD Pathways: Unlocking Software Engineering & Cybersecurity Careers

Watch the 60‑minute seminar session with Dr. Daniel Lim (watch video here with NetID).

OCS invited a Yale alumnus‑turned‑cybersecurity leader to reveal what hiring managers really look for in technical candidates. On March 6, 2025, Daniel Lim (Senior Vice President, Cybersecurity, JPMorgan Chase) shared insider guidance on translating advanced research skills into industry‑ready expertise—and negotiating the fast‑moving tech hiring landscape.

During this session, Dr. Lim explored:

  • How hiring managers read applications: résumé red flags, impact‑oriented bullet points, and the signals that spark interview invitations
  • Essential traits for software & security roles: problem‑solving depth, communication clarity, and a bias toward secure‑by‑design thinking
  • Interview success strategies: tailoring STAR stories, approaching technical challenges, and demonstrating cross‑functional collaboration
  • Career pathways in software engineering and cybersecurity: common entry points for PhDs, pivotal certifications, and growth tracks inside large tech‑driven organizations
  • His personal journey: from Yale engineer and UCLA political‑science PhD to U.S. Army Cyber Operations Officer and, ultimately, cybersecurity executive at a global bank
