20th Anniversary Hart Howerton Travel Fellowship

Now accepting applications for 2026

Internship & Travel/Research Opportunity

Named by Architectural Digest as “one of the Fellowship programs paving the way for the future of architecture,” the Hart Howerton Fellowship is open to undergraduate and graduate students in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, and interior design who will be entering their final year of study. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Fellowship, celebrating two decades of supporting future design leaders. Fellows have the opportunity to pursue independent travel and research on a topic of their choice alongside a summer internship in Hart Howerton’s New York or San Francisco office.

The firm has two research initiatives. Students are required to select one, and their proposed topic and travel location should directly align with that initiative. Complete Environments: New and innovative thinking that spans the fields of planning, architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. Healthy Living: Comprehensive design for improved health outcomes in the places we create. Students with similar interests are encouraged to apply.

Background:

In 2006, Hart Howerton began an educational initiative to fund a select number of Fellowship positions for students at design schools. For two decades, the Fellowship has offered annual summer internships in our New York and San Francisco offices, as well as funded travel for research on a topic the Fellow selects. Fellows graduate with the advantages of professional office experience, collaborative interdisciplinary design and worldwide travel and research. The Fellowship underscores Hart Howerton’s longstanding commitment to continuing educational opportunities, with the energy, enthusiasm and input of new designers who, in the process of learning, are laying a foundation for the next generation of design thinking.

Structure & Schedule:

The annual call for applications opens in the fall and closes January of the following year. Winners are announced in the spring and commence their internship, research and travel in the early summer. Hart Howerton defines an 8-week professional intern “assignment” as part of an existing firm project, followed by the Fellow’s self-defined, approved topic of travel and research. The 3-week travel/research period’s findings are prepared as a report presented by the Fellow to the firm and published by Hart Howerton.
