Students of Color

Students and alums of color may face unique challenges in the career exploration and job search process and in the workplace. Yale’s Office of Career Strategy is committed to supporting students and alums of color as they navigate the career decision-making process and assess organizations’ work cultures.

Some employers may offer diversity recruitment programs aimed to address historical gaps in the workforce, and students are encouraged to research those programs to learn more.

Assess an Organization’s Culture

  • Mission, Values, and Goals: How does the organization prioritize diversity and inclusion? What’s in their mission statement and goals?
  • Demographics: What percentage of employees are underrepresented groups? Do you see diversity at all levels of the organization?
  • Affinity Groups: Does the organization offer special interest groups for employees?
  • Workplace Environment: During your interview, observe interactions among the staff. How does the staff treat you, and one another?
  • Mentorship: Does the organization provide opportunities for mentorship and professional growth?

Connect with Yale’s Cultural Centers

The cultural centers at Yale are open to all and serve as gathering places for communities of various backgrounds. The centers foster a sense of cultural identity, encourage student leadership, facilitate critical reflection, and stimulate informed action and advocacy. They also act as social hubs for students, supplementing the larger Yale community.

The Office for Graduate Student Development and Diversity (OGSDD) is committed to building and maintaining a caring community of scholars where students from diverse backgrounds and experiences are supported in their goals and pursuits.

Engage Alumni and Professionals

People who identify similarly to you may have similar interests in job functions and industries.
