Yale Graduate Impact Fellowship FAQs

Q: Am I eligible to apply if my department is NOT in the Humanities Division?

A:  YGI Fellowship is currently only open to departments of the Humanities division.

Q: I am an international student. Am I eligible to apply?

A: Yes! The YGI Fellowship is open to international students. If your application is approved,  you will be required to apply for Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Please reach out to your OISS advisor for application specifics. Also, please note that if you have a TF20 teaching position, you may not be eligible for this fellowship. Under the current policy, international students are not allowed to work for more than 20 hours per week. Please make sure you confirm your particular visa constraints with your OISS advisor.

Q: Am I eligible to apply if I am a first-year Humanities Ph.D. student, or if I have not yet been admitted to candidacy?

A: Fellows must be currently matriculated, Yale Humanities Ph.D. students in years 2-6* of study and have been admitted to candidacy before the fellowship. You will be required to register for the course “GSAS 903: Post-candidacy Applied Research Experience and Practical Training,” if your application is approved.

Q: Does the YGI Fellowship allow for working with external departments but still within Yale?

A: No, the YGI Fellowship is intended for opportunities external to Yale and cannot be used at other Yale offices. However, OCS does offer part-time opportunities within Yale through the GSAS Professional Experience (GPE) Fellowship.

Q: Am I eligible to apply if I will be registered in absentia?

A: Yes. You are eligible to apply if you are registered in absentia.

Q: Am I eligible to apply if I will be a teaching fellow?

A: In most cases, international students are eligible to take the YGI fellowship if the teaching load is 10 hours/week. International students teaching at 20 hours/week are ineligible. However, please consult with your OISS advisor to confirm your situation. US citizens are not under such constraints.

Q: Is the fellowship start/end date flexible?

A: Yes. The start and end dates are flexible within the semester.

Q: Can I conduct my fellowship at organizations outside of the U.S.?

A: Students are eligible to do YGI fellowships at international organizations. It is the student’s responsibility to understand the tax implications of the country where you will be conducting the fellowship. If you have any questions regarding immigration and tax policy, please reach out to Luca Lipparini at OISS.

Q: Where have students previously completed YGI fellowships?
