Career Development Fellow

This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable.
Fellows receive housing, a $1000 monthly living stipend and a $500 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats.

Title: Career Development Fellow
Organization Description: The University of Alaska is the state’s higher education system and has three accredited universities, each filling a unique role in the state. The University of Alaska Fairbanks is the state’s research university; the University of Alaska Anchorage is the urban comprehensive university and the University of Alaska Southeast is the regional university. In addition, each university has affiliated community campuses providing career and technical education to help meet the state’s workforce needs. This fellowship position, based in Fairbanks, will work with the career services staff across the system to enhance connections between Alaska employers, current students, and graduates. In addition to providing career advising, mock interviews and resume reviews for students, the career services departments at the three universities collaborate to connect students and recent graduates with internship and career opportunities across the state through a shared presence on Handshake, a top employment recruitment tool for college students.
University of Alaska Career Services Offices:
The University of Alaska Career Development Fellow will work with career development staff across the university system to build employer engagement and expand use of Handshake for internships and career opportunities. Specific duties will vary depending on the interests and background of the selected applicant but may include:
Developing training resources for employers interested in advertising positions for UA students, including short videos, instruction guides and FAQs;
Conducting outreach to students and existing UA Handshake business users to identify ways to improve their user experience;
Examining industry demographics for existing UA Handshake business users to identify gaps in represented industries or communities;
Working with community campus staff to integrate Handshake into their engagement with students on career development;
Researching best practices for Handshake use at other universities;
Researching alternate, sustaining funding sources for Handshake, including sponsorships and event registration;
Developing guidance for employers interested in offering internships for UA students, both as paid internships and internships earning academic credit;
Collaborating with alumni offices at UAF, UAA and UAS to increase engagement with alumni-owned/managed businesses;
Developing marketing materials to encourage employers to use the Handshake platform to advertise their positions; and
Assisting with planning and execution of the UA Career Day activities and other system-wide career development events.
Position Logistics: This position will be based in Fairbanks, and will work with staff and business partners in Anchorage, Juneau and other locations across the state. Hours for this position will primarily be Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
Qualifications: Applicants must possess strong written and verbal communication skills; be proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Google workspace tools (including Drive, Forms, Sites, Hangouts, and Keep), be technologically savvy and comfortable with learning new software programs; and have strong customer service skills. Ideal applicants will be intellectually curious, highly organized, comfortable working both independently and with a team in a complex organization, action-oriented and results driven as well as open to giving and seeking feedback.
