About the Case Method Institute
Having grown out of a special project first inaugurated at Harvard Business School (HBS) in 2015, the Case Method Institute for Education and Democracy (CMI) is an independent non-profit committed to bringing the highest quality education to America’s high school students – and to fulfilling the democratic promise of that education – by empowering teachers to utilize the case method in their classrooms. Under the leadership of HBS Professor David Moss, CMI and its predecessor organization have brought the case method, long the favored teaching approach at leading professional schools, to 50,000 high-school students nationwide in every type of school environment, and with proven results: students in the program show improved critical thinking and argumentation skills, a deeper understanding of course material, and increased civic knowledge and engagement.
With plans to scale rapidly, CMI is now expanding its capacity to deliver best-in-class professional development to new cohorts of teachers, focused both on the fundamentals of case method teaching and a new, case-based curriculum on the History of American Democracy, which Professor Moss first created for Harvard undergraduates and which has since spread to high schools across the country. Over the coming years, we aim to work with many thousands of teachers, building a network of social studies educators with the capacity – ultimately – to reach millions of young people.
In these ways, CMI aims to strengthen American education and democracy, making a profound and lasting impact on the next generation.
