About the Case Method Institute
The Case Method Institute for Education and Democracy (CMI) aims to bring the highest quality education to America’s high school students — and to fulfill the democratic promise of that education — by empowering teachers to harness the case method in their classrooms. Long recognized as the leading instructional approach in business schools, the case method has now been shown to foster improved critical thinking, a deeper understanding of course material, and greater classroom and civic engagement in high schools across a broad range of students.
Founded by Harvard Business School professor David Moss in 2015, CMI is building on the successes of a pilot program that supported hundreds of teachers to reach nearly 30,000 students in 40 states. Now with plans to scale rapidly, CMI is building our team in order to expand our ability to deliver premier in-person and online trainings for high school teachers, combined with continuous ongoing monitoring, coaching, and support, creating genuine partnerships with individual teachers that help them effectively practice the case method in diverse school settings. Over the next ten years, we aim to train at least 10,000 teachers in the case method, creating a network of social studies educators with the capacity to reach millions of young people.
Ultimately, CMI aims to strengthen American education and democracy, making a profound and lasting impact on the next generation.
We are currently in the process of creating a new website for CMI now that it is operating as an independent organization apart from Harvard Business School. In the meantime, information about the project and its history can be found here: https://www.hbs.edu/case-method-project/Pages/default.aspx
