OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks talented individuals with unique perspectives to join the firm’s internship program with D. E. Shaw Investment Management (“DESIM”), its institutional asset management group. Building on the extensive experience and infrastructure of the broader firm, DESIM develops and manages active equity and multi-asset class investment strategies that complement the firm’s longstanding hedge fund strategies. DESIM interns will have the chance to collaborate with innovative teams across portfolio strategy and trading. This is a ten-week program that will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2027.
WHAT YOU’LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:
- Analyze and communicate insights on our active investment portfolios or related market analyses.
- Intern projects could include evaluating how changes in market dynamics, such as newly arising risks or geopolitical shocks, might impact our portfolios or our competitors.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Candidates who excel at problem solving, have a learning mindset, and have a demonstrated interest in financial markets (e.g., through involvement with investing or finance clubs or coursework, research experience, or quantitative or other academic competitions).
- Individuals who can think critically and contribute to the group in addition to generating ideas of their own.
- Applicants with demonstrated analytical thinking through data analysis or statistics coursework, projects, and/or internships.
- Knowledge of computer programming, particularly familiarity with Python, is an advantage but not a requirement.
- We welcome applicants from any field of study; no previous finance experience is necessary. Students in this program are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
- The position offers a monthly base salary of $11,000, overtime pay, a sign-on bonus of $7,500, travel coverage to and from the internship, and choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance. It also includes a $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and a $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment. If you have any questions about the compensation, please ask one of our recruiters.
