OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive records of academic and/or professional achievement to join the firm as systems administrator interns. The Systems team manages a broad range of technology infrastructure, supporting the firm’s operations through innovative solutions and collaborative problem-solving. The role offers the opportunity to be part of an engaging and collegial work environment. This roughly 12-week program will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2027.
WHAT YOU’LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:
- Be responsible for a variety of project and support work across a wide range of technology, including Windows PCs and servers, UNIX servers, mobile devices, cutting-edge storage and clustered computing solutions, and several communications platforms.
- Work may include troubleshooting complex technical issues, administering various infrastructure-level systems, and implementing automation and efficiency improvements.
- Specific projects will be matched to your interests and experience; some examples include working alongside our engineering team to build conference room monitoring tools, improving our capabilities for visualizing and reporting on metrics, and collaborating with other interns to find ways to enhance productivity through automation.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- Basic knowledge of the on-premise and cloud Microsoft enterprise environments and a demonstrated interest in improving processes and technology (e.g., through past internship experience, on-campus employment at a university helpdesk, personal projects, and/or academic achievements).
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills, as the role involves working with global colleagues across various backgrounds, experiences, and projects.
- Ability to excel at combining critical analysis and research to solve unfamiliar problems.
- Familiarity or experience with general systems administration, Linux environments, and Python, PowerShell, or similar technologies is a plus, as is the ability to effectively use AI-assisted development tools and AI automation techniques.
- Current enrollment in a four-year undergraduate or graduate degree program in any field of study; no previous finance experience is necessary. Students who apply to this internship are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
- The position offers a monthly base salary of $10,000, overtime pay, a sign-on bonus of $10,000, travel coverage to and from the internship, and a choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance. It also includes a $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and a $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment. If you have questions about the compensation, please ask one of our recruiters.
