WHO WE ARE:
The mission of Harvard Business School is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. In support of the mission, HBS hires a large and diverse group of talented researchers. Research positions provide recent college graduates with the unique opportunity to work with, and learn from, the world’s leading minds in management education and business practice. In addition, HBS hires a number of Research Associates who have earned advanced degrees, such as MBAs, JDs, and PhDs, or have worked in industry for years and bring an immense amount of practical experience.
THE WORK WE DO:
Harvard Business School seeks Research Associates to partner with faculty on significant course and curriculum development, and scholarly research projects. The role of Research Associates may be similar to that of Analyst or Associate in the consulting world. Research Associates have the opportunity to make contributions towards the faculty’s academically rigorous research agenda in areas from Finance and Strategy to Organizational Behavior and Entrepreneurial Management.
As an RA, you may focus on intensive statistical analysis or conducting interviews in the field – some roles may encompass both. Projects may involve writing and editing, data gathering, designing qualitative and quantitative research tools (in different software packages such as STATA, Python, R, SPSS, SQL, Latex), gaining understanding of subject matter and synthesizing findings, planning and conducting interviews, creating and interpreting analyses and assisting with the creation of presentations.
Research Associate positions are term appointments at HBS, and follow the fiscal year from July 1st through June 30th. In most cases, Research Associates continue on with the same faculty member for the duration of their time with HBS, which is typically 2-3 years.
Basic Requirements: BA/BS degree. Research Associates at Harvard Business School bring a diversity of backgrounds and skills including areas of study such as anthropology, economics, English, history, philosophy, psychology and sociology, as well as all other areas of the humanities and social sciences. We seek outstanding analytical and interpersonal skills, educational and professional backgrounds; we generally do not require specific industry background.
Applicants should be prepared to submit writing samples and transcripts upon request.
Harvard University offers generous benefits including medical and dental coverage, up to 4 weeks of vacation time per year, 11.5 University-recognized holidays, University-sponsored pension plan, tuition assistance program, training and development programs and a variety of discounts and purchasing offers.
These roles open doors in many directions. It offers first-hand exposure to leading scholars and practitioners, the opportunity to participate in the development, testing, and dissemination of new theory and related curriculum, and involvement with senior leaders in public and private sectors. Aside from being a terrific preparatory role for pursuing graduate and doctoral studies, RAs go on to enter the world of consulting, continue in-depth research at world renowned think-tanks, or often pursue a position in an industry that they learned as part of their work here.
