Harvard Business School seeks two full-time Research Associates to assist with the daily operations of Professor Jesse Shapiro’s research agenda. The position will entail close collaboration on a number of new and ongoing projects in applied microeconomics, broadly defined. This position is ideal for candidates with an interest in economics who have plans for doctoral studies in two years.
The RAs will report directly to the faculty and administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. The ideal candidate will: (i) have a strong quantitative background; (ii) have significant experience with coding and computing; (iii) be able to work independently to solve problems; and (iv) have a long-term interest in pursuing research in economics. Background in economics is a plus, but not necessary—we welcome candidates with strong technical backgrounds who are looking for more exposure to economics.
Previous RAs for Prof. Shapiro have gone on to study at leading PhD programs; some are now faculty, including at the University of Pennsylvania, Berkeley, Yale, and Princeton.
Collect, clean, synthesize, and analyze data. Produce statistical models. Provide analysis of data exhibits for academic journal articles. Provide statistical analysis and design for reports and presentations.
Develop and maintain expertise in new research methodologies and techniques. Manage and manipulate data using requested languages, including, for example, Python, R, MATLAB, and STATA.
Collaborate successfully with faculty, students, and other RAs at Harvard and collaborator institutions.
Independently manage all timelines and deliverables. Exercise independent decision-making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies.

These are a full-time term appointments starting in the new year through June 30, 2022, with likely reappointment for the following year. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as term appointments. Strong preference for candidates willing to commit for two or more years.
