HBS seeks a Research Associate to join the U.S. Competitiveness Project team, led by Professors Michael Porter and Jan Rivkin. Duties include: data collection and analysis; writing and research; conducting and coordinating on-site field research meetings and interviews; gathering/analyzing data; performing sophisticated research utilizing world-class data sources; and developing supplemental electronic courseware/case exhibits. In addition, candidate will be expected to contribute to new Project priorities as they arise and share tasks within the team.
Specific responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Deliver research support in the form of economic data collection and analysis
Present analysis in charts, memos, and PowerPoint decks
Maintain internal dataset tracking economic trends, as well as a policy tracker covering the Federal government’s regulatory and legislative actions in key economic areas
Write literature reviews in the public policy and competitiveness field
Synthesize information from diverse sources and present findings in concise memos to the professors
Analyze survey and other economic data for research reports and publications using Stata and Excel
Help draft and edit op-eds based on research findings
Lead fact-checking process for new research reports
Serve as a liaison with faculty and internal departments to move agenda along
Partner with Program Director/Sr. Researcher to write and deliver content on U.S. competitiveness and best practices in the form of working papers, slides, cases, among others
Provide support on website and social media activities; seminars and event organization.
Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Statistics, Mathematics, or a Business, Econometrics, Engineering, or Science field required.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Statistical/programming experience and/or applied experience with Python, STATA, MATLAB, or R.
Familiarity with, eagerness to learn about, and perhaps even passion about U.S. competitiveness is a plus.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated project management experience, with excellent analytical and communication skills (both written and oral). Evidence of outstanding academic achievement. Strong mathematics or statistics background. Statistical/programming experience and/or applied experience in STATA preferred. Indication of training and good habits in data management and analysis. Evidence of prior high-quality data manipulation and analysis required. Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint are expected. All candidates will be required to complete a quantitative presentation exercise.
Proven ability to work independently and creatively. This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative. The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion. He or she must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary. It is helpful if the candidate is familiar with navigating a complex organization, such as Harvard Business School. Preference for candidate who plans to seek an advanced degree.
This is a full-time term appointment starting as soon as possible through June 30, 2022, with strong potential for reappointment. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as term appointments. The ideal candidate should be willing to commit to work at the Institute for two or more years in order to attain a mastery of the subject.
