Description: Kairos Academies (www.kairosacademies.org) is an exciting new charter school in St. Louis, where everyone directs their own lives and learning. Founded by Gavin Schiffres (YC ’15) and a fellow Teach For America Corps member frustrated with the traditional school model, Kairos focuses on personalized learning, leveraging technology to differentiate curricula and nurture student agency. Kairos opened its doors for 6th graders in the fall of 2019; now, we have over 200 students in both 6th and 7th grade. Looking to double our headcount and teach grades 5-8 next year, our Fellows will be on the ground floor of ed reform—recruiting students, presenting at community meetings, helping implement our academic model, and everything in between. This internship is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about education reform, innovative school models, and entrepreneurialism. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and roll with the punches.
Have questions about the experience? Ask us or any of our amazing former interns (former Yale undergrads): Sara Harris, Jack Lattimore, Emma Ruohoniemi, Anna Kane, and Laura Nicholas.
Position: Want the broadest possible view of what it’s like to run a school, a startup, a nonprofit? Want experience with lots of different areas, topics, and skills all at once? Want every day to be different (and almost never what you planned)? In this role, you’ll have your hands in everything the network team does, from student recruitment and community outreach to fundraising to space expansion and communications, and much, much more.
The Fellow will function autonomously and be expected to take initiative toward our shared mission of empowering low-income students. Projects depend on the Fellow’s particular interests but may include:
- Canvassing a neighborhood to recruit parents and engage families
- Meeting with community organizations to explore partnerships (e.g., student enrichment programs/externships)
- Researching curricula, furniture, and technology options
- Managing logistical and digital nonprofit infrastructure
- Other projects of the Fellow’s initiative
We strongly prefer bright and hungry to learn over experienced but complacent. School startup is a scrappy, all-hands-on-deck endeavor, so please only apply if you’re ready to get in the weeds of ed reform.
