Legislative Action Internship Opportunity
Kennedy Children’s Center is seeking an intern to help strengthen our relationships with local and state policymakers in order to secure funding for initiatives outside the scope of our mandated services, and to draw awareness to the inequities experienced by private early childhood providers, including staff salaries that are nearly 30% lower than those provided to public school teachers with the same qualifications.
Kennedy Children’s Center is a private nonprofit organization that has provided mandated services to public school children for over 60 years. We provide high quality education services to preschool-age children with developmental delays, in partnership with families and communities. Our child-centered, evidence-based instruction prepares each student to enter the New York City public school system in the least restrictive environment possible. We support families with training, guidance, and advocacy, and strengthen our school community through professional development and collaborations with local human service organizations. In addition, KCC is committed to empowering a new generation of early childhood educators through our Grow Your Own Teacher Assistant and Teacher Training Program.
Responsibilities: The intern will work closely with KCC executive staff to design a thoughtful and comprehensive communication plan for legislative outreach. Key responsibilities will include:
- Build a communication plan and contact framework with local and state policy makers that KCC staff can maintain and expand after the internship period has ended
- Design and implement public relation events connected to the programs operated by KCC
- Identify public funding and grants to help underwrite key initiatives outside of our state-funded early childhood programming
- Drafting policy memoranda, developing advocacy materials, and drafting content for publication and websites
This position is located at our Manhattan headquarters, 2212 Third Avenue, New York, New York 10035.
