In 2020, the United States commemorated the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote, providing an important opportunity to celebrate the place of women in American history. Through its Where Women Made History campaign, the National Trust is working to tell the full history of women in the United States—to uncover and uplift women across the centuries whose vision, passion, and determination have shaped the country we are today. Our goal is to discover 1,000 places connected to women’s history and elevate their stories for everyone to learn and celebrate.
To help meet this goal, the National Trust will compile information about past National Trust grantees and awardees to create baseline data on our work to date, to help make the case for expanded funding for these sites, and to tell the stories of these sites and their histories.
National Trust internships are temporary, volunteer experiential learning opportunities with no expectation of employment at the conclusion of the internship.
For this internship, the National Trust is offering a stipend of $2,000 to help offset expenses. The period of the internship would be from approximately June 7, 2021 to July 30, 2021, for approximately 28 hours per week (flexibility of schedule available).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most National Trust staff and interns will continue to work remotely for the foreseeable future (currently projected through August 2021). Internships for 2021 will be performed remotely.
Under supervision of the Director of Grants and Awards, and working with colleagues from across the National Trust, the Women’s History intern will:
- Analyze extensive records on past grants and awards given by the National Trust to identify women’s history sites and stories
- Propose data tagging keywords to help classify projects; tag records appropriately.
- Quantify past engagement and demonstrated need in order to create a need statement for use with potential funders.
- Identify trends and themes, including identifying projects that demonstrate intersectionality.
- Identify projects that are ripe for deeper engagement or projects that are well-suited for highlighting across National Trust content channels and author at least one content piece.
- Attend Women’s History Initiative team meetings and incorporate the work of the larger initiative into this work as appropriate.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE TO THE INTERN
The intern will gain experience under the mentorship of respected preservation professionals in an educational setting at one of the nation’s leading arts & cultural and non-profit advocacy organizations. The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in educational programming offered virtually via the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s internship program. Students may also be eligible for college or graduate school academic credit at the discretion of their institution.
Specifically, the intern will gain knowledge in the following areas:
- U.S. women’s history
- Preservation best practices
- Basic grantmaking practices
- Data analysis and storytelling
At the end of the project the intern will have produced content related to women’s history sites and preservation which can be added to their professional portfolio in support of their future career pursuits.
- Basic analytical and problem solving skills, including issue identification and prioritization. Basic project-organization skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Research and writing skills.
- Ability to collaborate and achieve results with supervision, including ability to interact professionally with key internal and external stakeholders as needed. Public contact and ability to work successfully with others in a virtual setting required.
- Strong organizational skills required, with ability to prioritize, multi-task efficiently, and meet deadlines in a timely fashion.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills. Friendly and professional demeanor on the phone and in writing, with ability to speak and write clearly in English. Bi-lingual language skills a plus.
- Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse colleagues; connections to or experience helping to engage culturally diverse audiences and partners a plus.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required, including Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Regular and reliable availability required.
- Bachelor’s level studies (or equivalent years of experience) required; current or rising juniors, seniors or graduate students preferred. Studies or demonstrated interest in related subject matter preferred. Knowledge of U.S. women’s history a plus.
