Environmental Outreach and Communications Intern

The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) seeks a passionate, self-motivated, highly organized individual with a keen interest in reducing waste and pollution to join our team of dedicated, collaborative environmental stewards. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from experts working in a fast-paced organization that has been at the forefront of the product stewardship movement in the U.S. for the past two decades.

Application Due Date: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply ASAP.

Time Commitment: 20 hours per week. Rolling start for spring, summer, fall

Compensation: $15 – $20 per hour. Internships under Praxis funding or for course credit welcome.

PSI works with diverse stakeholders to reduce the health, environmental, and economic impacts of more than 20 consumer products. Best known for our collaborative approach to developing both voluntary and legislated solutions to recycling and waste management issues, PSI has a long history of successes, including:

• Conceived of and facilitated the multi-stakeholder dialogue process that led to the first industry-run paint recycling program in the country, now operating by law in 10 states and the District of Columbia;

• Initiated the national discussion on e-waste that resulted in 25 state electronics recycling laws;

• Helped Connecticut develop and pass the first mattress recycling law in the U.S., becoming a model for similar laws passed in California and Rhode Island;

• Led a national coalition that changed the federal law and subsequent regulations to allow pharmacies to collect controlled prescription drugs, increasing consumer convenience and lowering costs; and

• Developed the packaging EPR model used to developed federal legislation and legislation in several states.

As Outreach and Communications Intern you will assist PSI’s collaborative team on various projects including:

• PSI’s newsletters, legislative updates, social media, and other communications materials that promote PSI’s reports, toolkits, educational resources, and ongoing projects and initiatives.

• Outreach materials (e.g., blogs, fact sheets, videos, graphics) to promote EPR for packaging (including plastics), paint, pharmaceuticals, medical sharps, carpet, mattresses, HHW, electronics and other products to support education about product stewardship programs.

• Marketing materials to promote PSI’s consulting services, membership and partnership programs, and individual fundraising program.

• PSI’s educational webinars and other events, including assisting with sponsorship promotion, registration management, and event coordination.

• Slide decks and other presentation materials for public and conference speaking engagements.

• Maintaining PSI’s contact database, including subscription management.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate or graduate degree (or degree candidate) in communications, marketing, graphic design, public policy, environmental science/studies, city planning, natural resources and materials management, or a related field

• Passion for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling; corporate environmental responsibility; and circular economy principles

• Excellent communications skills (both written and oral)

• An eye for design and proficiency in Canva and/or Adobe Suite

• Ability to quickly synthesize and evaluate information and data

• Strong time management and organizational skills, and ability to multi-task

• Self-starter with a positive attitude who shares ideas and actively tries to identify solutions to problems rather than waiting for someone else to provide the solutions

The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI) is a national nonprofit working to reduce the health and environmental impacts of consumer products from design and production through end-of-life. PSI takes a unique approach to solving environmental problems by bringing key stakeholders together in well-designed dialogues to forge lasting agreements rooted in producer responsibility and sustainable materials management. The organization has built capacity for product stewardship in the U.S. for the past 20 years, conducting both voluntary and legislative product stewardship initiatives. PSI works closely with 47 state environmental agency members, hundreds of local government members, and over 120 partners from businesses, universities, organizations, and international governments.
