New York, NY Internship or Part-Time Job Expires April 30, 2021

OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated, intellectually curious students from all disciplines to join us as generalist interns. We match each generalist intern with a department involved in the firm’s strategy and operations: you could spend your summer in the COO Group, Corporate Development, Finance and Operations, Human Capital, Investor Relations, Legal and Compliance, Risk, Systems, or Treasury. There are many paths you can take as a generalist intern—each involves collaborating with colleagues across the firm on challenging, high-impact projects designed to help you learn, grow, and gain a deeper understanding of what it’s like to work with us.

What you’ll do day-to-day:
You’ll take on projects that require rigorous analytical thinking and creative problem solving. You might evaluate whether and where to open a new office, research prospective new investors for our funds, develop a recommendation on whether to launch a renewable energy fund, or examine how well market indicators predict the results of recent global elections.
Throughout the summer, you’ll work closely with your manager, who will mentor you and support your professional development. You’ll be able to take advantage of our robust learning curriculum customized for generalist interns to strengthen your skills—and learn some new ones. You’ll also have regular opportunities to learn about us and our industry from internal and external experts, interact with employees from across the firm, and enjoy events and outings like talks, Broadway musicals, and casual game nights.

Who we’re looking for:
• Most importantly, and in keeping with our firm’s culture, we’re more interested in talent, curiosity, and drive than we are in any particular skill or experience.
• We’re interested in highly analytical, accomplished students. Generalist interns communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), excel at taking initiative, and thrive on collaboration. They are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
• Generalist interns don’t need any previous finance knowledge or experience. We welcome—and encourage—applications from individuals from all academic disciplines. Some recent generalist interns majored in biomedical engineering, art history, physics, social studies, economics, and statistics/data science.
