This is a critical moment for thoughtful American liberals to interrogate and revise their own first principles of public life—and there is no publication better positioned for that ambitious undertaking than The New Republic. Gearing up for 2021, we are looking for an experienced writer with expertise in political analysis, reporting, and opinion.
This is a full-time position. Though TNR’s staff is working remotely due to the pandemic, you must be based in the metro areas of New York or Washington, D.C. The writer will be expected to write a high volume of pieces at a range of lengths and with a variety of approaches—from incremental coverage of America’s permanent campaign to analyses of long-running ideological and policy debates to profiles of major players on the American political scene. Applicants should have a minimum of three years experience, as well as a track record of promoting their work on social media and through other channels, such as personal email newsletters and TV/radio interviews.
To apply, please submit your résumé and a cover letter explaining why you’re right for this job. The cover letter should be tailored to TNR and show an understanding of our sensibility and history. Please include links to five clips.
