New York, NY External Internship, Internship or Part-Time Job Expires March 12, 2021

The Times Square Fellows Program provides exceptional students or recent graduates interested in public service with the opportunity to work within one of the country’s most respected and high-profile non-profits.  Fellowships are paid (and includes a local transportation stipend) and are full time for the summer.  Areas of focus include policy, planning and design, public space management, events and programming, communications and government affairs.  Times Square Fellows are assigned to a department to assist with and advance major projects or initiatives.  In addition, a core part of the program is regular professional development programming, which includes lunches and talks with senior Alliance staff as well as community, civic and governmental leaders.

Fellows are eligible to work in various areas some of which include Public Arts, Operations, Administration, Communications, and Economic Development & Policy. Applicants must specify their first and second fellow preferences when completing their application. Below are descriptions of each fellow and of the Times Square Alliance. Please review before applying.

The REMOTE Fellowship is open to graduate students and undergraduates entering their junior or senior year of college.  Application deadline is March 12, 2021 and interviews will take place between March 15th – 26th.

Economic Development & Policy Fellow

The Economic Development & Policy Fellow will help advance the Alliance’s strategic priorities in the realm of public policy, research, and economic development. The Fellow will be asked to support new and ongoing research initiatives related to economic development and public space management. The fellow will also assist with the Alliance’s external affairs and policy agenda by drafting advocacy documents, preparing for meetings with public officials, and attending City Council hearings and Community Board meetings on behalf of the Alliance. Additionally, depending on which events are possible, the fellow may help with data collection and survey analysis of such events. Applicants that are passionate about urban policy, public spaces, research or economic development are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have strong analytical and writing skills and some experience with research, with an ability to learn quickly and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Development & Strategic Partnerships Fellow

The Alliance’s Partnerships team oversees sponsorships for the organization’s annual signature events and fundraising for Times Square Arts’ public art program. The Partnerships Fellow will work on assignments supporting prospect research and strategy, with a focus on expanding sponsorship outreach for events (such as New Year’s Eve and Solstice in Times Square) and philanthropic support for Times Square Arts. Projects will include developing compelling writing supporting upcoming public art projects, creating outreach materials for marquee events, conducting research to analyze sponsorship offerings and public art initiatives in the field, and identifying new partnership opportunities and strategies. Candidates should have an interest in fundraising, public art, and event planning, and an enthusiasm for the Times Square Alliance’s mission.

TSqArts Engagement Fellow

The mission of Times Square Arts is to collaborate with contemporary artists to experiment and engage with one of the world’s most iconic urban places. Times Square has always been a place of risk, innovation and creativity, and the Arts Program ensures these qualities remain central to the district’s unique identity. It is arguably the world’s largest public platform for innovative contemporary performance and visual arts, with hundreds of thousands of people passing through it daily. The TSqArts Engagement Fellow will support Times Square Arts’ innovative program to engage that diverse audience in learning activities centered around contemporary public art and may additionally involve strategy development for engaging local communities and digital audiences. Projects will grow out of the Fellow’s interests and a close relationship with the Public Art team. Applicants should have demonstrable interest or experience in contemporary art, arts/museum education, community organizing, visitor services, or any type of guided learning in public space.

Operations-Data Fellow

The Operations Department works to “keep the engine of Times Square going”. As Public Safety and Sanitation Teams work to keep Times Square safe and clean, it is important that their work is documented accurately to make data-driven decisions, improve operational efficiency and meet the needs of the neighborhood. The Operations Department is currently seeking a highly-motivated, scrappy Operations Fellow to work closely with the Operations Department to assist with improving quality of life issues, work force analysis, public safety and sanitation processes, and database management. In Times Square every day is different; therefore, being flexible and hands-on with the ability to keep up with fast-paced environment and procedural changes are extremely important. The fellow will assist with projects related to the maintenance and operation of the department and Times Square district and projects will grow out of the Fellow’s interests.

Storytelling Fellow

The Times Square Alliance is seeking a Storytelling Fellow to tell the story of Times Square through the production of original video content that brings to life stories from one of the world’s most iconic urban places. Working with the Communications department, the Fellow will conduct research on the people, narratives and ideas that populate Times Square’s present day life, and help articulate the strength and resilience of the neighborhood by highlighting rea life stories and those from its history.  This Fellow will create content across our social platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), drive engagement, and actualize their own ideas for campaigns and content.  Responsibilities may include digital content/video/social media creation, research and storytelling on the history of Times Square, the state of contemporary urban issues in the neighborhood, and profiles of the businesses and residents who continue to make the area an icon of entertainment, culture and urban life.
