Understand the Drug Development Process: A Conversation with Timothy Zheng PhD ’99, Chief Scientific Officer at Siduma Therapeutics

Bringing a drug candidate to market is an arduous process, ranging from 10 to 15 years, that entails rigorous scientific testing and collaboration with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). As part of the STEM PhD Pathways Program, OCS McDougal Fellows hosted Dr. Timothy Zheng (PhD ’99, Immunobiology) to spotlight the drug development process and career paths in the biopharmaceutical industry. On October 11th, Dr. Zheng shared his career journey and 20+ years insight into drug research and development.

Dr. Zheng is the Chief Scientific Officer at Siduma Therapeutics. As a veteran of the biopharma industry, he has extensive drug hunting experience spanning the entire spectrum of research and development, including target discovery, development candidate selection, translational research, and filing of INDs and BLAs.

Dr. Zheng joined Siduma from two Flagship Venture Companies Cygnal and Inzen Therapeutics, where he served as Senior Vice President in charge of overall research strategy and key development programs. Prior to his foray into biotech startups, he was the Executive Director of Immune Modulation at Boehringer Ingelheim and Director of Immunology at Biogen. During his tenures at Biogen & BI, Dr. Zheng led many discovery research efforts that successfully transitioned to the clinical development stage including anti-TWEAK, anti-OSMR and anti-SIRPa, and managed external academic and industrial partnerships, as well as the evaluation of in-licensing programs.

Dr. Zheng pursued his undergraduate study in Nuclear Chemistry at Fudan University in Shanghai, China and received his Ph.D. in Immunobiology from Yale University
