Position Description: We are looking for intern project coordinators (PC) to help with administrative and logistical assistance for the farm-based wellness program (FBWP) on program evenings for two hours from 5:30 pm-7:30 pm on Tuesday & Thursday evenings. The PC’s schedule may be flexible throughout the week when working remotely. However, attending in-person programming will likely be required during regular session dates/time. Additional work hours may be done remotely to accommodate interest/schedule. The goal for the PC position will be to work with the FBWP team to help facilitate activities as needed that promote intended health messaging to the FBWP participants. Attendance to the entire program is not required but encouraged. Enthusiasm and strong interest in working with our audience is required.
The FBWP is oriented toward an adult audience that has screened positive for prediabetes. The abilities of the program participants may vary, so it is important to find a way to engage participants of all abilities. We also plan to have child specific activities in case this is of interest.
Projects may include special projects, urban gardening, recipe demonstration, photo journaling, documenting participant attendance and data, food distribution logistics, coordinating volunteer workflow during programming, coordinating event logistics. The project is determined by matching the needs of the intern with the needs of the program.
Supervisors: This position will be supervised by the Program Manager. This is an unpaid position but we encourage candidates to seek financial support for their work (e.g. form a Summer Expereince Award).
Farm-Based Wellness Program: The Farm-Based Wellness Program (FBWP) is an intensive lifestyle intervention program that primarily receives patient referrals from local clinics in the New Haven area with diet-related illnesses to participate in a summer program where they are engaged in gardening activities, mindfulness, nutrition education, and a whole food plant-based nutrition recipe demonstration. Participants also receive a share of vegetables grown at local urban organic farms throughout New Haven throughout the duration of the summer program and possibly into the fall season. The program continues throughout the remainder of the year on a monthly basis for participants to continue to receive support and motivation to reach their self-contrived nutrition and physical activity related goals. After the year is over, participants are encouraged to stay engaged through social media and/or community events. They are also encouraged to cultivate food at one of their local community gardens.
